Presidents CupĀ International Team captain Nick Price believes Indiaā€™sĀ Anirban Lahiri, the current Asian Tour number one, will beĀ an asset to his squad who will face the United States inĀ Korea in October.

Price started following Lahiriā€™sĀ rapid rise since the middle of last year when the IndianĀ star made his way up the International Team rankings whichĀ is based from the Official World Golf Ranking.

ā€œI had been keeping an eye onĀ the World Ranking.Ā  Every Monday I sort of pop it upĀ and see who is moving.Ā  I spoke to him (Lahiri) lastĀ year because he had moved up to about I think 15th or 16thĀ on the internationalĀ points list, so I knew he was playing well and I had seenĀ his form,ā€ said the Zimbabwean.

ā€œSo I chatted to him a littleĀ bit and then I just sent him an e-mail after he won in Malaysia, which wasĀ a pretty strong win, the way he played at the end. And thenĀ winning in Delhi the next week, I also watchedĀ that.ā€

With four wins on the Asian TourĀ in a span of 10 months which included victories at theĀ Maybank Malaysian Open and Hero Indian Open, both co-sanctioned with Europe last month, Lahiri has risen toĀ 35thĀ place on the world rankings and currently sits in fifthĀ position on the International Team list for the PresidentsĀ Cup.

Price, who was speaking at theĀ WGC-Cadillac Championship in Doral where Lahiri is makingĀ his debut, reckons the Indian golferā€™s ability to hole bigĀ putts was one of his greatest assets as proven in in recentĀ times.

At the CIMB Niaga IndonesianĀ Masters last year, the 27-year-old Indian holed an eagleĀ from 25-feet on the 72nd hole to win by oneĀ stroke and also rolled in a 50-foot birdie at theĀ 71stĀ hole to win the Maybank Malaysian Open last month. He alsoĀ chipped in for par on the 71st hole which keptĀ him in the lead at the Hero Indian Open, which he won in aĀ play-off.

Lahiri has shown he is also handyĀ in match play. At the inaugural EurAsia Cup, which pittedĀ Asia against Europe last March, Lahiri was a central figureĀ in the teamā€™s fightback to force a thrilling 10-10 draw,Ā holing a crucial six-foot putt on the last hole to ensure aĀ win with Siddikur Rahman in the second dayā€™s fourball thatĀ gave Asia the momentum going into the final day singles,Ā which he subsequently defeated Victor Dubuisson ofĀ France.

Price said: ā€œI think he’s aĀ great putter. I think he hits the ball-Ā all these guys outĀ here hit the ball really well. But looks like he can make aĀ big putt on a big occasion. Certainly that’s whatĀ he’s shown us or what I’ve seen on TV over the lastĀ couple of months. But very calm, collected,Ā and I think he’s going to be an asset to ourĀ team.

ā€œI spoke to him yesterday; butĀ back last year, he appeared on my radar, and I thinkĀ he’s a very competent player, and I think he’s goingĀ to bring-Ā he just needs to play decently the next two or three monthsĀ and I think he’s going to be a lock on the team which isĀ going to be great for us and for India. I think it’sĀ going to be a certain ground breaking for him to be on theĀ team.ā€

Lahiri took Priceā€™s stamp ofĀ approval in his stride, although he has been lamenting aboutĀ his putting in recent months. ā€œWell, it’s funny thatĀ you say that, because up until a few months back, I thoughtĀ thatĀ (putting) was one of the weak links in my game.Ā  But IĀ think I’ve worked on the mental aspect of putting, andĀ it’s kind of improving.Ā  I still don’t thinkĀ I’m a fabulous putter.Ā  But a lot of people tell meĀ that I can putt, so I think I should start believingĀ them.ā€Ā

Three-time Asian Tour number oneĀ Thongchai Jaidee, ranked 38th in the world, isĀ also in line to make the International Team where heĀ currently lies in sixth place on the team ranking.Ā  IfĀ they qualifyĀ for the International Team, Lahiri and Thongchai willĀ become the first Indian and Thai respectively to play in theĀ biennial team competition.

The cut-off for qualifying isĀ September 8.

The Presidents Cup will be played at the JackĀ Nicklaus Golf Club in Incheon from October 8-11.
