Norway’s Alexander Kristoff won the men’s European road cycling championships in Herning, Denmark on Sunday.

The 30-year-old, who will leave Katusha to join UAE racing at the end of the season, edged out Italy’s Olympic omnium champion Elia Viviani in a photo-finish at the end of the 241.2km race, with Dutchman Moreno Hofland of the Netherlands third.

It was only the second edition of the European Championships, which like the world championships is raced in national squads rather than professional teams.

World champion Peter Sagan of Slovakia won the inaugural edition last year in France. – Agence France-Presse
