Malaysia’s No 1 women’s doubles pair Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei marched into the quarter-finals in the USD900,000 Indonesia Open Superseries Premier when they upset world No 2 and second seeds Nitya Krishinda Maheswari-Greysia Polii in the second round.

The Malaysian pair shocked the partisan home crowd at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta with a 21-17, 21-19 win in 45 minutes. It will be another another Indonesian hurdle for a place in the last four.

Vivian Hoo-Khe Wei will face Anggia Shitta Awanda-Mahadewi Istirani Ni Ketut who upset Korea’s sixth seeds Jung Kyung-eun-Shin Seung-chan 21-19, 19-21, 21-19 in a 65 minute battle.

In the men’s singles Asian champion Datuk Lee Chong Wei strolled into the quarter-finals with an effortless 21-10, 21-13 win over Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long in only 31 minutes.

In the quarter-finals on Friday the Malaysian No 1 will face China’s Wang Zhengming who stopped seventh seed Chou Tien-chen of Taiwan 22-20, 21-11.

But the story of the day at the Bung Karno Stadium was Lin Dan’s straight sets defeat to Indonesian youngster Christie Jonatan. Christie won 21-12, 21-12 in 36 minutes to earn a quarter-final clash against Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark.

Ihsan Maulana Mustofa gave Indonesia more to cheer in the men’s singles when he defeated Chinese qualifier Huang Yuxiang 21-18, 21-15 for a quarter-final clash against England’s Rajiv Ouseph. Rajiv defeated Hong Kong’s Wei Nan 11-21, 26-24, 21-15.

It was a bad day for Indonesia in the men’s doubles when second seeds and world No 2 Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan failed to get past Denmark’s Mads Conrad-Petersen-Mads Pieler Kolding. The Danes won 19-21, 21-13, 21-18.

Top seeds Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong had earlier knocked out Marcus Fernaldo Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 21-15, 21-19 while Akbar Bintang Cahyono-Angger Sudrajat were beaten 9-21, 13-21 by China’s Chai Biao-Hong Wei, the fifth seeds.

The Chinese pair will face Malaysia’s No 1 pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong who overcame compatriots Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong 22-20, 22-20 in their second round encounter.

In the women’s singles top seed Carolina Marin of Spain fought off a tough first set against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi to win 24-22, 21-14 in 47 minutes. In the quarter-finals the Spaniard will face India’s eighth seed Saina Nehwal who came off 21-11, 21-10 winner over Indonesia’s Fitriani Fitriani.

Taiwan’s Tai Tzu Ying ended China’s Li Xuerui’s campaign in Jakarta with a 21-18, 21-18 win over the third seed in 30 minutes. Fourth seed Wang Yihan was also given a tough fight by Denmark’s rising star Line Kjaersfeldt before winning 21-13, 18-21, 21-12 in 48 minutes.
