# Malaysia next play Japan on Thursday to decide group champions


Malaysia booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 5-0 whitewash of Nepal in a Group B match in the Asia Team Championships in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

It was Malaysia’s second win in the group, having beaten Sri Lanka 4-1 in their first match on Tuesday. Malaysia are assured of a place in the quarter-finals with a second place finish behind Japan who won both their matches by 5-0 margins against Nepal and Sri Lanka.

Former Asian and world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkifli gave Malaysia their first point with a 2-15, 21-15 win over Sajan Krishn Tamrakar in 17 minutes before Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin outplayed Bishnu Katwal 21-3, 21-4 for the second point in only 15 minutes.

Soong Joo Ven, playing his first match in the Asian meet delivered Malaysia’s third point when he won the third singles against Nabin Shreshta 21-9, 21-12 in 22 minutes.

Joo Ven replaced Soo Teck Zhi in the team against Nepal after Teck Zhi lost his match against Sri Lanka.

Malaysia also swept both the doubles matches. Low Juan Shen-Tan Kian Meng made shortwork of Bishnu Katwal-Bikash Shresta 21-8, 21-6 before Tan Chee Tean-Tan Wee Gieen wrapped their match Sudeep Sedhar-Sajan Krishna Tamrakar 21-6, 21-12.

Malaysia meet Japan in the top of the group clash on Thursday to decide the group champions.

The Malaysian women’s team will face China also on Thursday to decide the group champions in Group A. Both have qualified for the quarter-finals after beating Hong Kong. China won 5-0 while Malaysia won 3-2.
