Indonesia avoided the wooden spoons’ tag when they finished third in Group B of the AFF Women’s Championship 2019 following their convincing 4-0 win over Cambodia in their final group tie here at the Institute of Physical Education.

Indonesia, who had conceded heavy losses to Myanmar and Vietnam earlier, were more determined on the day as they slotted in two goals in each half for the win.

“It was important that we win today so as to avoid finishing at the bottom of the group,” said Indonesia head coach Rully Nere. “This tournament is important to us as it allows us to further develop this team for the SEA Games.”

Indonesia did not take too long to stamp their authority in the game as they pushed Cambodia back in the opening quarter before Mayan ran in past two markers in the 22nd minute off a quick counter before slotting the ball home.

They then doubled their advantage three minutes later with Dewi Tia Safitri unleashing a dipping shot from some 20metres out to beat Cambodian keeper Chen Soveat for the second time.

Cambodia played it tight after the break as they held off Indonesia for long periods including a superb header from Shalika Vlandrisa that came off the crossbar.

It was not until the very last minute that Indonesia finally added to the tally with another stinger from Dewi Tia in the 89th minute and then Baiq Shalifah punishing a miscommunication between keeper Chen and defender Sok Li right at the end.

“We are a young team with some players being only 15 or 16-years-old,” said Cambodian head coach Oum Savong. “We had good opportunity to play against the big teams like Vietnam and Myanmar which will be good for the development of the young players.”
