World Athletics Half Marathon Championships Yangzhou 22 has been cancelled

The World Athletics Council has reluctantly decided to cancel the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships Yangzhou 22 in November 2022, as a consequence of the pandemic.

Following extensive discussions with the local organising committee (LOC) and the Chinese Athletics Association, it has been mutually agreed that the championships cannot be held in Yangzhou this year.

However, the Council also resolved to grant the World Athletics Road Running Championships to Yangzhou in March 2027.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe thanked the Yangzhou LOC and the Chinese Athletics Association for their excellent work in preparing to host the World Half Marathon Championships.

“Unfortunately, the championships can’t be held this year, through no fault of the LOC, but our endurance athletes will have the opportunity to compete in Riga next year,’’ Coe said. “The Council’s decision to award another event to Yangzhou in 2027 indicates its faith in the organising committee and willingness to return and stage a World Athletics Series road running event there at the first available opportunity.” 

The World Athletics Road Running Championships, which will make their debut in Riga, Latvia, on 30 September – 1 October 2023, will incorporate the half marathon championships in future, as well as introducing world 5km championships. Mass races will be held alongside the elite championships to allow recreational runners to be part of a global festival of road running.

Annulation des Championnats du monde de semi-marathon de World Athletics Yangzhou 22

Le Conseil de World Athletics a décidé, à son grand regret, d’annuler les Championnats du monde de semi-marathon Yangzhou 22 initialement prévus en novembre 2022, en raison de la pandémie.

Après de longues discussions avec le Comité d’organisation local et l’Association chinoise d’athlétisme, la décision de ne pas organiser les championnats à Yangzhou cette année a été prise d’un commun accord.

Toutefois, le Conseil a également pris la décision d’attribuer à Yangzhou l’organisation des Championnats du monde de course sur route de World Athletics en mars 2027.

Le président de World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, a remercié le COL de Yangzhou et l’Association chinoise d’athlétisme pour leur excellent travail de préparation en vue d’accueillir les Championnats du monde de semi-marathon.

« Malheureusement, les championnats ne peuvent avoir lieu cette année, indépendamment de la volonté du COL. Néanmoins, nos athlètes d’endurance auront l’occasion de concourir à Riga l’année prochaine », a déclaré le président Coe. « La décision du Conseil d’attribuer à Yangzhou l’organisation d’une autre compétition en 2027 est une preuve de sa confiance dans le comité d’organisation et de sa volonté de revenir en Chine pour y organiser, à la première occasion qui se présente, une compétition de course sur route qui fasse partie de la Série mondiale. » 

Les Championnats du monde de course sur route de World Athletics, dont la première édition aura lieu à Riga, en Lettonie, du 30 septembre au 1^er octobre 2023, intégreront à l’avenir les championnats de semi-marathon et marqueront l’inauguration des championnats du monde de 5km. Des courses de masse seront organisées parallèlement aux championnats élite pour permettre aux coureurs récréatifs de participer à cette célébration internationale de la course sur route.
