‘We need more tournaments like 100PLUS Junior Circuit’ – Frost
‘There could be more players quitting ‘
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) technical director Morten Frost expects more national players to quit in the wake after men’s doubles pair Mak Hee Chun-Teo Kok Siang submitted their resignations on Tuesday.
“I expect more to quit,” said the Dane who is in Alor Star on a talent spotting trip in the on-going 100PLUS National Junior Badminton Circuit Finals being held at the Kedah Badminton Association (KBA) Hall.
“I don’t expect resignations from the coaches but I expect some more players to throw in the towel. Malaysians lack self-confidence. This is seriously lacking in the local players. This needs to be checked.”
Former world junior champions Hee Chun-Kok Siang were teammed up in March but failed to make any headway in the five tournaments they competed in – which led to their sudden resignations.
The pair were hailed as future world beaters after winning the Asian junior and the world junior titles in 2008. But the duo failed to strike at the senior level.
Meanwhile, Frost said Malaysia needs more junior tournament for the young talent to “polish up their talent” and build up their self-confidence.
“The 100PLUS National Junior Circuit is a good place to spot young talent. We need more states to hold such tournaments…another two or three legs will be just fine,” added Frost.
“I see some good badminton talent from outside the Bukit Jalil School. I am impressed with what I saw. “
Frost returned to Kuala Lumpur at night because the national team to the world championships in Jakarta leaves tomorrow. The world meet begins on Aug 10 and ends on Aug 16.
