Penang’s Yeoh Seng Zoe is the new Boys’ Under-18 singles champion in the 100PLUS National Junior Circuit Finals when he stopped giant killer Tan Jia Wei in straight sets 21-19, 21-10 in the final at the Kedah Badminton Association (KBA) Hall in Alor Setar on Saturday.

It was Seng Zoe’s first win over Jia Wei in six meetings. Jia had toppled defending champion Chin Wai Kin in the semi-finals on Friday.

“I was mentally stronger today to face Jia Wei.  It is my first win six meetings and winning the Under-18 is certainly sweet as I had lost to him in the quarter-finals in the Perak Open last month,” Seng Zoe after his win.

His coach Razlan Abdullah said another contributing factor in Seng Zoe’s win was his “patience and and game control” which rattled Jia Wei.

The Girls’ Under-18 title went to Thinaah Muralitharan (Bjss/Sel) who rallied from a set down to win 12-21, 21-19, 21-17 in a 49 minute battle. The win made up for the disappointment of finishing runners-up in the Under-16 – losing to Ng Qi Xuan in the final.

“I took time to get my footing on the slippery court. But once I won the second set to force a rubber I got my rhythm and confidence,” said Thinaah who won the Under-12 and Under-14 title previously.

Qi Xuan (Bjss/NS) was in her element to retain her Under-16 title but far from happy in her 21-14, 16-21, 21-18 over Ng Wan Win (Bjss/Sel) in the final.

“Retaining the title is one thing but I am not happy that I had to play three sets. However, I was hampered my right shoulder injury,” said Qi Xuan, who won the Division Two title in the Perak Open last month.

In the battle of Bukit Jalil in the Under-16 Boys’ singles final Muhammad Shafiq Iqbal was too strong for Sim Fong Hau with a straight sets 21-16, 21-13 win.

Negri Sembilan’s Chen Jia Huo-Chen Tang Jie took the Boys’ Under-18 doubles title when they brushed aside Lew Ming Hui-Nur Izuddin Romasani of Johor 21-15, 21-19.
