ACTION at the National Sailing Centre in Langkawi started late on Thursday (24 Aug) due to rain and a lack of wind in the morning but Principal Race Officer Ilker Bayindir managed send the sailors out to sea by 3pm and finish the two races scheduled.

Malaysian sailors did well in all 11 categories, topping the table for both Boys and Girls Optimist events, International 470 (Men), International 420 (Men) and Laser Radial (Men) while placed second in the Laser Standard, International 470

(Women), Laser Radial (Women) and both the RS One Men’s and Women’s events.

Meanwhile, Nur Aishah Kovo Mohd Yusri and Nurul Izzryn Shamsul Ariffin improved their standings in the International 420 Women’s event to finish third in the table.

For 2014 Asian Games gold medallist Faizal Norizan, racing at his home base Langkawi is an advantage in many aspects such as maintaining focus when the weather is not cooperating like today.

“I have been sailing here for a long time, I know what the weather is like and days like this does not affect my focus on the race,” said Faizal.

Faizal and his International 470 crew Ahmad Syukri Abdul Aziz finished third and second respectively in their two races today and are confident to maintain their momentum in their remaining races.

“We are doing well, but we need to minimise our own mistakes to ensure that we achieve our target,” Faizal said.
