The 2018 Asian Games torch was welcomed with 12 art performances in Garut, a West Java regency nicknamed “Swiss Van Java” given its stunning mountains.

The torch relay on Sunday started from the Kubang Battle Monument and passed through Tanjung Gas Station, Jl. Cipanas intersection, Pujasega area, Tarogong Square Police Station and the Garut office of state-owned electricity company PLN.

The Garut regency administration showcased 12 art performances along the torch relay’s route.

Garut Culture and Tourism Agency head Budi Gan Gan said the performances included pencak silat, a calung (a bamboo xylophone) show, percussion, keroncong music and reog dance.

In the second part of the torch relay, the torchbearers paraded the Asiad torch around the Garut town area, such as Simpang Lima, the Garut Technology Institute (STTG) campus, the Leuwidaun traffic circle and Jl. Cimanuk before finally arriving at Garut Town Square.

Students and residents cheered as the torch was paraded around town.

Garut Regent Rudi Gunawan says the torch relay served as an opportunity to promote Garut’s tourist spots.

“The Asian Games torch relay is a moment for us to promote our tourism because Garut has lots of tourist spots,” the regent said.

Previously, Garut Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Budi Satria Wiguna said the police force together with the Indonesian Military (TNI) were ready to secure the torch parade.

“We are ready to carry out the torch relay today. Maintaining the security of the event is important, not only for Garut, but also for Indonesia,” said Budi.
