Malaysian women’s doubles duo, Amelia Alicia Anscelly and Soong Fie Cho created the biggest upset of the Badminton World Championships here in Jakarta when they bundled out top seeds, Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi crashing out of the tournament.
The Japanese pair are the first No.1 seeds of the world championships to face a premature exit. The Malaysians did everything just right to secure a major scalp here. They bagged the first game at 21-15 but dropped the next at 12-21.
Misaki-Ayaka battled furiously but the more composed national players ensured they qualified for the quarterfinals with a convincing 21-14 win.
The girls, however, will have to put aside their amazing feat today to focus on the next tie which will either be against hosts and seventh seeds, Nitya Krishinda Maheswari Greysia Polii or 14th seeds Shizuka Matsuo-Mami Naito tomorrow.
Earlier today, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying fell out of contention when they lost to third seeds, Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir. The Indonesians won 21-8, 21-13.
