The women’s singles crown went to Spaniard Carolina Marin who came from behind to upstage top seed Li Xuerui in the final of the Maybank Malaysia Open here this evening.

Carolina, seeded sixth here, was overpowered in the first set, going down 21-19. She staged a spirited challenge in the second set and levelled the score with a 21-18 win. Li could have actually sealed the game but unforced errors saw her lose the tie and eventually the game.

In the decider, Carolina and Li battled all the way but at the tail-end of the game, the Spanish star shifted into overdrive and raced away with the title, winning 21-17.

Carolina, the reigning world champion, pocketed USD 37,500 for her win while Li went home with USD 19,000.
