South Korea’s An Se-young underlined her status as the world No. 1 and the current Olympic champion with a crushing win over China’s Gao Fangjie at the China Masters 2024.
It took the 22-year-old just 38 minutes to put down the unheralded Fangjie 21-12, 21-18 in front of the home fans in Shenzhen.
The victory was Se-young’s first since her Paris Olympic Games’ triumph and her fourth BWF World Tour crown this year after winning the Malaysia, French and Singapore Open earlier in the year.
South Korea also added a second title through the Men’s Doubles in Jin Yong and Seo Seung-ae when they beat Indonesia’s Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani in the final.
It took Jing Yong-Seung-ae 42 minutes to wrap up their first ever BWF World Tour title 21-16, 21-16.
However, China still raked in two BWF Super750 China Masters titles at home when they won the Mixed Doubles and the Women’s Doubles titles.
But the current world No. 3 and the tournament’s Mixed Doubles top seed Feng Yan Zhe-Huang Dong Ping were made to work hard for their win when they were fully stretched by Malaysian pair Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Yu Sin.
In the battle that raged for an energy-sapping 93 minutes, it was the Malaysians who took the first set 23-21 before Yan Zhe-Dong Ping fought back to win the next two sets 25-23, 21-16.
In the all-China final of the Women’s Doubles, second-seeded Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning were in no danger of losing the plot as they easily set aside the challenge of compatriots Li Yi Jing-Luo Xu Min 21-10, 21-10.
On the other hand, Anders Antonsen from Denmark won the Men’s Singles crown to take his fourth BWF World Tour title this year.
The 27-year-old third seed took over 50 minutes to beat Jonatan Christie from Indonesia 21-15, 21-13.
