CRICKET-ENG-AUS-ASHESANDY FLOWER has “stepped down” as England team director, after the team’s whitewash Ashes loss in Australia, the ECB announced today.

“Following the recent very disappointing Ashes defeat, it’s clear to me this is now time for England cricket, led by (captain) Alastair Cook, to rebuild with a new set of values and goals,” Flower said in an ECB statement.

“The opportunity to start with a clean slate and begin to instil methods to ensure England cricket is moving in the right direction will be an incredibly exciting challenge for someone but I do not feel I’m in a position to undertake that challenge.”

Despite former Zimbabwe international Flower being in charge of England’s recent 5-0 Ashes series Test drubbing in Australia, the ECB said they wanted to retain his services.

“We are at advance stages of negotiating a role for Andy within the ECB structure which will best utilise his undoubted skills,” the board said.
