Harry Kane, break-out star of the current Premier League season, has signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur, the London club announced on Monday.
“The club is delighted to announce that Harry Kane has signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract which runs until 2020,” Tottenham announced on their website.
Kane, 21, came through Tottenham’s youth academy and has scored 20 goals in 33 appearances this season, making him the leading scorer in all competitions in the English top flight.
“It’s been a great six months,” Kane told the Spurs website. “I’ve been really pleased with how things have gone. This is another stepping stone and hopefully now I’ll push on again from this and get even better.”
Kane made his Spurs debut in a Europa League game against Scottish side Hearts in August 2011 and has spent time on loan at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City.
Popular with the club’s fans, who chant that he is “one of our own” due to his local roots, Kane starred in Spurs’ 5-3 rout of Chelsea on New Year’s Day, scoring twice.
“The Chelsea game on New Year’s Day was probably the loudest I’ve heard it and it was an emotional night, a very good night, and hopefully there are more to come,” he added.
“The (League Cup) semi-final at Sheffield (United) was another I won’t forget. The fans were incredible, really sung their hearts out and when we scored the second goal, the eruption was amazing.
“I’d love the fans to keep singing my name and hopefully I’ll continue to do well on the pitch and we’ll continue to do well as a team.”
Kane has been capped by England at under-17, under-19, under-20 and under-21 level and has been tipped to be named in the senior England squad for their fixtures against Lithuania and Italy in March. – Agence France-Presse
