Motivated by compatriot Azrol Hazal Wafie Izhar Ahmad’s gold medal effort in the 56kg and below category earlier in the morning Muhammad Aznil Bidin gave Malaysia their second gold medal in weightlifting in the 21st Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia on Thursday.
 
The 24-year-old Kedah born Aznil swept to the gold in the 62kg category at the Carrara Sports and Leisure Centre with a lift of 126kg in the snatch and followed up with 162kg in the clean and jerk for a 288kg total.
 
The silver went to Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea who totalled 286kg and Pakistan’s Talha Talib took the bronze with with figures of 283kg.
 
It was Malaysia’s second gold in weightlifting in Gold Coast. Earlier in the morning Azroy was the toast of Malaysia by winning the country’s first gold.
 
The feat was all the more sweeter for the 24-year-old Azroy as he also became the first athlete to set a new record in the this year’s Commonwealth Games.
 
Azroy took the gold with a new record in the snatch with a lift o 117kg – rewriting the old record of 116kg set by his coach Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim. Amirul is in Gold Coast with Azroy. Azroy lifted 144kg in the clean and jerk for a 261kg total and the gold.BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
