Former champions SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah moved up to second in the Super League of the Minister of Education League Cup Under-14 when they beat SMK Mutiara Impian of Penang 3-2 on Saturday.

The slim victory allowed the side from Kedah to leap frog over SMK Za’ba of Negeri Sembilan, who dropped down to third – although both teams are at least eight points behind leaders Gambang Sports School U14.

“We are getting better and better for sure,” said SMK Tunku Anum U14 coach Faizal Rijalrudin. “We will just have to continue improving to make sure that we make the cut for the quarter-finals.”

In an evenly contested tie in Simpang Empat, the visiting side from Alor Star made it an end to end battle as both teams became deadlocked 2-2 at the half.

Goals from Mohd Daniel Irfan Mohd Nadzri (17th minute) and Muhammad Amirul Akmal Safarinizam (32nd) for SMK Mutiara Impian were cancelled out by Mohd Azim Roslan (21st) and Mohd Aiman Afif Md Afizul (35th).

But it would be Khairul Amir Mahamad Asri’s strike in the 44th minute which separated both teams as SMK Tunku Anum picked up only their third win in nine matches.

The loss for SMK Mutiara Impian meant that they moved down to sixth.

With Gambang Sport School U14 having the day off, SMK Syed Hassan of Perlis strengthened their position on fourth at the table when they beat SMK Seksyen 11 of Selangor 3-1.

But it was no easy street for SMK Syed Hassan when they found themselves trailing by a goal down as early as the second minute when Muhammad Shamin Ariffin scored for the visitors.

However, SMK Syed Hassan fought back off Muhammad Adam Haiqal Ibrahim in the 13th minute, Ilyas Borhan (20th) and Muhammad Izzat Norizam (49th) for the win.

In the meantime in the Premier League, SMK Putera of Kelantan failed to close the gap on the leaders when they fell to a 2-0 loss to SMK Seri Kota of Melaka.

The home team scored through Azmil Hamer in the ninth minute and Muhammad Afiq Ramli in the 58th minute for the side from Melaka to stay fourth.

The U14 team of Sports School of Tengku Mahkota Ismail (SSTMI) further strengthened their position at the top of the table with a comfortable 3-1 victory over cross town neighbours SMK Tun Hussein Onn of Johor.

It was SMK Tun Hussein Onn who went ahead first though Muhammad Alif Mohamad  Zaidi in the 43rd minute before SSTMI replied off Mohd Nasip Mohammad Zain in the 59th minute and T. Saravanan (48th and 68th).
