There was little to separate both sets of players but in the end, the vociferous home support was the key to Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong’s first win in the E-Plus Badminton Asia Team Championship here at the Sultan Abdul Halim Indoor Stadium.

The troubled duo who came back as a duo just weeks before the start of the championship here in Alor Star, delivered Malaysia’s second point after Datuk Wira Lee Chong Wei had delivered the first earlier.

And while there were concerns that V Shem-Wee Kiong would struggle against the pair from Chinese Taipei, the duo set aside their differences to win 21-14, 19-21 and 21-16.

“We’re happy to win the point for Malaysia and we look forward to scoring more in the next round. I believe we can do better if we have a good support like today,” said V Shem.

“The pressure was definitely there as we had to get the point for the team but we stayed focused. Although we won the first set and lost the second, we came back stronger in the third set.

“We do feel the pressure in every tournament and I think today we managed to overcome that problem,” added Wee Kiong.

“I believe both pairs were a little nervous as both sides had to win today. So we definitely felt the weight on our shoulders. Today’s game play was slower and maybe that made us consistent.- BY ALVIN OH
