The Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) have opted for independent assessment of their athletes ahead of the KL2017 SEA Games in August.

All 12 athletes are currently training in China and WFM secretary general William Kong is confident that they will get the right report. The six boys and six girls will take part in all 17 events  at KL2017.

“From the coach’s report they are progressing well. The athletes also participated in a tournament in Macau where they were assessed by the judges there. It’s an independent assessment made by international judges for our athletes,” explained William.

“If we were to assess them here in Malaysia, it would be very subjective. As such we have applied for them to participate in the championship not to win medals but solely for the assessment of their performances.

“The scores were encouraging. At the start of the meet, the scores were average but moving towards the end, they improved.”

Despite the stiff competition the national squad has ahead of them, William is confident that the team are capable of reeling in a few gold medals although he did not to disclose the target.

“We’re hoping to get as many gold medals as we can but at present we are confident that we can win at least three or four gold.

“There will be no room for errors. We’re facing stiff competitions from Indonesia comprising a taichi world champion and other strong athletes. We’re quite even in terms of point, so it will depend on the actual day itself when the Games begin.
“Our squad are comprised of mostly seniors. In terms of stability, they do have the experience and mental toughness. But you can never be sure of anything,” added William. – BY ALVIN OH
