The BMW M6 GT3 will make its race debut next season â and yet the new GT racing car at the forefront of the BMW Customer Racing range is already the talk of the town at this yearâs NĂŒrburgring 24 Hours (DE). The car was the âstar guestâ at the M Night â the official opening of the fifth M Festival for fans of the most powerful letter in the world, which is held on the race weekend. BMW works driver Jörg MĂŒller (DE) was at the wheel of the BMW M6 GT3 as the powerful sports car spectacularly took centre stage.
âThe BMW M6 CoupĂ© obviously provided us with a sensational base, on which to develop the new car,â said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt. âThat makes it twice as much fun for our engineers, working hand in hand with their colleagues at BMW M, to transform it into a car for the racetrack. We are hugely looking forward to the first race outing of the BMW M6 GT3 in 2016. I am sure we will continue to add chapters to our motorsport success story with this car.â
Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH, also emphasised the parallels between BMW M and BMW Motorsport, illustrating them with an exciting piece of news. âWith the new Competition Package, the engines in the BMW M6 CoupĂ©, BMW M6 Convertible and BMW M6 Gran CoupĂ© will produce 600 hp at 700 Nm in the future. This makes 0 to 100 km/h possible in just 3.9 seconds for the CoupĂ© and Gran CoupĂ©, and 4.0 seconds for the Convertible,â said van Meel. âThis innovation shows the huge potential of our 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. And we obviously love to be able to exhaust this potential.â
âThe NĂŒrburgring, BMW M and BMW Motorsport simply belong together,â said MĂŒller after presenting the car in front of a large crowd. âAnd it makes you incredibly proud to take to the stage in this brand-new baby. The BMW M6 GT3 will give fans of BMW M a lot of pleasure in the future.â
BMW Motorsport customers from all over the world had previously enjoyed a first exclusive look at the BMW M6 GT3 at a âClosed Roomâ event at the BMW M Test Centre in NĂŒrburg (DE) on Wednesday, during which they were given a detailed introduction to the car by drivers and engineers. The guests were particularly interested in the 4.4-litre V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology, which is also used in the BMW M6 CoupĂ© and was only slightly modified for its outings on the racetrack. The high-tech powertrain with dry sump lubrication generates 500 hp and impressively high torque. âThat will definitely make it easier for us to overtake coming out of slow corners,â said MĂŒller, giving a driverâs point of view.
The BMW M6 GT3 weighs less than 1,300 kilograms. The transaxle drive concept, six-speed sequential racing transmission and chassis, which was optimised in the BMW wind tunnel, ensure that BMW Motorsport will compete with a genuine racer in 2016. The reliability, efficiency and ease of maintenance of the BMW M6 GT3 have also been optimised for its outings at endurance races. The longer wheelbase significantly improves the carâs handling compared to the current BMW Z4 GT3.
To offer the drivers of the BMW M6 GT3 as much protection as possible against the effects of a crash, BMW Motorsport developed and produced the FIA-approved safety cell in accordance with the very latest safety standards. The car also boasts numerous other features, the sole purpose of which is to protect the driver. These include the roof hatch specified in the regulations, through which the driverâs helmet can be removed if necessary, as well as the safety seat, which was also developed by BMW Motorsport and is bolted firmly into the chassis.
While the BMW M6 GT3 must wait until the 2016 season for its first race on the Nordschleife, the carâs predecessor â the BMW Z4 GT3 â will be in action on Saturday: the six cars in the SP9 class at the 43rd staging of the endurance classic in the Eifel Mountains get underway at 16:00hrs.
