Datuk Lee Chong Wei staged an extraordinary recovery in the second game to seal a 21-11, 21-12 victory over South Korean world number two Son Wan-ho in 37 minutes to march into the semi-finals in the Hong Kong Open superseries on Friday.

The 35-year-old Malaysian – a four-time winner in Hong Kong – seeded number eight, crushed the Korean hope once he got into rhythm after being 3-11 down in the second game, reeling off 18 of the 19 points to shock his second seeded opponent.

For a place in the final the Malaysian will face Chinese youngster Shi Yuqi, who came back from a game down to defeat five-times world champion and compatriot Lin Dan 13-21, 21-17, 21-15 in 62-minutes.

Lin Dan was a first round casualty in last week’s Tahoe China Open Superseries Premier in Fuzhou – losing to Indonesian youngster Christie Jonatan 19-21, 16-21.

Rio Olympics champion and last week’s China Open winner Chen Long defeated Korean Lee Dong Keun 21-16, 21-13 to advance to the semi-finals in Hong Kong. Chen Long, will face Denmark’s Anders Antonsen in the semi-finals. The Dane defeated Japan’s Kazumasa Sakai 21-15, 21-13.

Malaysia’s challenge in the men’s doubles came to an end with the defeat of Ong Yew Sin-Tan Wee Kiong. The Malaysians went down to world number one and top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo of Indonesia in straight games 14-21, 17-21.
