Datuk Lee Chong Wei is the lone Malaysian left in the Badminton Asia Championships in Wuhan China after the world No 2 defeated Hong Kong’s Vincent Wong Wing Ki in the second round on Thursday.

In the quarter-finals on Friday the 33-year-old Malaysian will face Taiwan’s Chou Tien-chen who he has beaten twice in their previous two meetings last year – in the Thaihot China Open and the French Open. Chong Wei beat the Taiwanese to win the French Open.

In the second round Chong beat Wing Ki 23-21, 21-12 in 52 minutes and faced some anxious moments in the first set. But once he got into the rhythm it was Chong Wei’s game.

Malaysians were shown the exit in the women’s doubles when Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei could not sustain their grip and lost to world No 2 Nitya Krishinda Maheswari-Greysia Polii of Indonesia 18-21, 22-20, 21-11 in 78 minutes.

Malaysia also failed to get going in the mixed doubles when Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing went down tamely to top seeds Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei of China 21-10, 21-12 in their second round match.

Meanwhile in the men’s singles defending champion Lin Dan, top seed Chen Long and Lee Chong Wei marched into the quarter-finals.

Chen Long, the world No 1 hardly raised a sweat in his 21-12, 21-10 win over Malaysia’s Zulfadli Zulkifli in 42 minutes and will face Indonesia’s seventh seed Tommy Sugiarto for a place in the semi-finals.Tommy was equally impressive in his 21-17, 21-9 win over Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana.

In the men’s doubles defending champions and top seeds Lee Yong-dae-Yoo Yeon-seong stayed on course to retain their title. They Korean pair needed only 31 minutes in their 21-8, 21-9 win over Hong Kong’s Or Chin Chung-Tang Chun Man.

However it was the end of the road for last year’s runners-up and second seeds Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia after their 15-21, 21-15, 21-3 defeat to China’s Li Jinhui-Liu Yuchen.

The men’s doubles was littered with upsets when fifth seeds Hiroyuki Endo-Kenichi Hayakawa of Japan and seventh seeds Kim Gi-jung-Kim Sa-rang of Korea suffered defeats in the second round.

In the women’s singles after the shock defeat of defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand in the morning second seed Nozomi Okuhara (Japan).third seed Wang Shixian (China) and fifth seed Saina Nehwal (India) advanced to the quarter-finals.
