Malaysia’s mixed doubles gold medal hopes remained on track today as Edmund Teo/Boon Wei Ying powered their way into the semifinals, keeping alive the national contingent’s mixed doubles title bid at the Deaflympics Tokyo 2025.
The Malaysian duo delivered a composed and confident performance, defeating Chinese Taipei’s Cheng Chen Ding-Fan Jung-Yu 21–16, 21–11 in a 35-minute encounter.
Maintaining control throughout the match, the national duo displayed sharp communication, tactical patience, and a cool and disciplined approach which proved too much for their opponents.
They now advance to a high-stakes semifinal clash tomorrow against Korean pair Shin Kyungduk/Park Min Kyeong, a matchup expected to test the Malaysians’ consistency and resilience.
“We’ve given our best on the courts today, and kept strong communication while adopting a patient game. The most important thing is to stay composed,” said Edmund, reflecting on the victory.
For Wei Ying, who earlier suffered disappointment in the women’s doubles with partner Foo Zu Tung, the win was a timely boost and a chance for redemption.
“I’ve forgotten the loss, and my focus now is to ensure we can go all the way to the podium in the mixed doubles,” she said, determined to make the most of her remaining medal opportunity.
Malaysia’s women’s doubles pair Boon Wei Ying / Foo Zu Tung, failed in their bid to repeat their 2022 gold medal feat after losing to the Chinese pair in straight sets, 13–21, 8–21.
“Tried as we may, it was just not our day,” Wei Ying admitted, visibly disappointed but committed to shifting her focus to the mixed doubles campaign.
Meanwhile, in tenpin bowling, Malaysia’s hopes were dashed as Siw Sing Hie and Siong Mui Hong failed to progress into the semifinals of the women’s individual event after finishing fourth and fifth respectively in their group ties.
