# Malaysia to play Argentina for bronze medal playoff
# Pakistan winless after 3-1 defeat to Malaysia
Defending champions India edged Australia 1-0 – thanks to a penalty stroke goal by Harmanpreet Singh in the 42nd minute – to finish on the top of the table with 12 points in the 5th Sultan of Johor Cup Under-21 Invitational International tournament at Johor Bahru’s Taman Daya Stadium.
Great Britain had earlier beaten Argentina 3-0 to finish second with 11 points while Malaysia completed their round robin fixtures in the third place with seven points – ahead of Argentina on goal difference after a 3-1 win over Pakistan.
In the process Pakistan is the only team to finish the league fixtures without a win and will play fifth placed Australia in the playoff.
Malaysia rode on two quick penalty corner goals by Shahril Saabah and Najmi Farizal Jazlan in the fourth and seventh minutes respectively. Shahril got his second in the 62nd minute through field attempt before Pakistan pulled one back on 68 minute through Abu Mahmood off a penalty corner.
“The last match is always the most important…whether it is the final or the playoff for the bronze medal. We will go all out to win to be on the podium,” said Malaysia coach A. Arul Selvaraj.
In last year’s final India edged Britain 2-1 to retain the title. Earlier in the league Britain beat the Indians 2-0.
The scenario is the same this year. In the round robin league match India squandered a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3.
But the Indians have established themselves as the favourites and coach Harendra Singh said “the mistakes have been ironed out” and India will be not be in mood to surrender the title they have won the past two years.
“I must admit that it was not an easy match against Australia but the confidence of winning the title is there after we won our last three matches,” said Harendra.
