Goh Jin Wei served a pleasant surprise in the girls’ singles event when she defeated Thailand’s joint ninth seed Thamolwan Poopradulsil in th e second round of the World Junior Championships at Stadium Sultan Abdul Halim in Alor Star on Monday.
Jin Wei triumphed in a three-game thriller, winning 21-14, 17-21, 21-14. Hailed as Malaysia’s best badminton talent, she battled for 47 minutes against the Thai to earn a third round clash against Germany’s Yvonne Li, who won 21-16, 11-21, 21-15 against Jang Na Ra of South Korea.
It is hoped the 14-year-old Jin Wei, who had beaten beat Mexico’s Haramara Gaitan 21-9, 21-11 in the first round, will serve up a few more surprises this week.
Cheam June Wei, the only Malaysian seeded in the boy’s singles, also advanced to the third round after a 21-15, 21-19 win over Japan’s Kazuki Kirita. June Wei had a first round bye.
“I was a bit nervous as Kazuki was quite strong in his game. But I did play well but slowed down when I was leading 20-14 in the second set as I was tired,” said June Wei after his win.
The Malaysian will now play Ronan Gueguin (France) in the third round.
Keeping June Wei company is another Malaysian, R. Satheishtharan, who beat Thailand’s Mek Narongrit 21-16, 21-19, which earned him a third round clash with Korean Kim Hui Tae.
However, it was game over for Lee Zii Jia and Tan Jia Wei who failed to get past Muhammad Bayu Pangishthu (Indonesia) and Lu Chia Hung (Taiwan) respectively.
In the girls’ singles Ho Yen Mei came unstuck against China’s joint ninth seed Qin Jinjing in the second round and lost 21-19, 21-17 after a hard fought match that lasted 37 minutes. Tew Jia Jin also fell by the wayside when she lost to Russia’s Maria Dmitrieva 19-21, 21-16, 21-15.
