wtcc.trophyThe FIA World Touring Car Championship aces contesting WTCC Race of Germany at the Nürburgring Nordschleife this weekend (14-16 May) will chase an exciting new award to be presented at the AUTO BILD Goldenes Lenkrad (Golden Wheel) event later this year.

A jury consisting of representatives of the leading German publication, race organisers ADAC Nordrhein, the German motorsport federation DMSB and WTCC promoter Eurosport Events will hand the prestigious bronze trophy to the driver whose performance they judge to be the best.

The WTCC Nürburgring Nordschleife Best Driver award, which has been created to mark the WTCC’s first visit to the legendary venue, will be presented at Das Goldene Lenkrad for the next three seasons. The event takes place every November.

Announcing the new award in front of WTCC drivers and journalists at the Nürburgring, WTCC General Manager François Ribeiro said: “This is a brand new award category created specifically for the WTCC. The trophy won’t necessarily go to the driver who wins a race. Instead, it could be that a driver who produces a heroic recovery drive or pulls off a spectacular overtaking manoeuvre is chosen as the winner. The trophy will be presented for the next three years and we known it will be an award every WTCC driver will want to win.”

WTCC Race of Germany features two three-lap contests on Saturday 14 May. They will be broadcast live on television around the world.
