After a highly successful season this year the Sabah Tennis Association can look forward to better things to come in 2019.
The new Sabah Sports Minister Datuk Frankie poon has approved an allocation to upgrade the Likas Stadium Courts – the main venue for local and international tennis tournaments held in Kota Kinabalu.
Sabah Tennis Association president Johnson Koh revealed after a chairing the STA Exco meeting in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday.
The STA Exco also approved a budget of RM190,000 for next year. Several exciting tennis events have been lined up for 2019. 
“The STA Exco also put on record their appreciation and thanks to former Luyang assemblyman Datuk Hiew King Cheu for allocating funds to resurface eight tennis courts at Likas,” said Johnson.
STA will also conduct advance coaching for juniors next year in a bid to raise the level of the game in the state. 
Among the significant tournaments for 2019 are the Inter affiliates state tournament scheduled in April before the “puasa ” month and the ATF Sabah-leg Under-14 championships scheduled for June 19-23. The Sabah team tennis invitational tournament is scheduled to be from October 4-6.
Johnson Koh also thanked the minister for agreeing to erect glading structures to block the dangerous glare at the four roofed tennis courts at Likas.
“STA also approved Sabah’s participation in the next Sukma (National Games) which will be held in Johor in 2020,” said Johnso, adding that top players from Sabah will be sent to play in tournaments in the peninsula states for exposure.
