Malaysian men’s doubles duo, Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong turned in to a powerful performance to upstage seventh seeded South Koreans, Ko Sung Hyun-Shin Baek Choel 21-12, 21-15 at the Istora Senayan here tonight. The Malaysian pair combined superbly to outplay their rivals in just over half an hour.
They will face ninth seeded Chinse duo of Luo Xiaolong and Qiu Zihan tomorrow in the third round.
Zulfadli Zulkifli meanwhile surprised when he advanced to the next round after a smashing win over Scott Evans of Ireland here earlier today. The Malaysian played a cool game and punched the air in delight after his 21-16, 21-13 victory which has earned him a battle against Nan Wei of China. Nan Wei stunned home favourite Tommy Sugiarto, the 15th seed here, in today’s second round.
The other Malaysians to win their game today and remain in contention were Amelia Alicia Anscelly and partner Soong Fie Cho. The pair had a good run and easily swept past Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva of Bulgaria 21-17, 21-14. But their run may come to an end as they are up against topseeds, Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi.
The Japanese had earlier beaten another Malaysian pair, Joyce Wai-Yap Cheng Wan 21-10, 21-9.
