German football coach Karl Heinz Weigang is back in the limelight of Malaysian football after struggling Perak appointed him as the new head coach.

He takes over the hot seat from former Malaysian international Syamsol Saad as Perak struggle to stay alive in the Super League. Syamsol will now be Weigang’s assistant.

In the Malaysia Cup draw on May 22 Perak were drawn in Group C together with newly crowned FA Cup champions Johor Darul Takzim (JDT), Police and Premier League club PKNS FC.

Weigang is no newcomer to the Malaysian football scene and the wily German has a long love affair with the sport – from being a national coach to state coach. At state level he had coaching stints with Perak and Johor.

The German will have a dual role with Perak. Apart from being the head coach Weigang will also be the Perak FA’s technical director.

Perak FA president Datuk Puhat Mat Nayan said Weigang’s appointment is also in line with Perak’s three year development plans.

This is Weigang’s second stint with the state, having coached Perak from 1998 to 2000.
