All three Malaysian Olympic silver medallists cruised through their opening matches on the opening day of the Japan Open which began in Tokyo today.
Chong Wei, the world No.1 and topseed here, led the way with an easy 21-14, 21-13 win over Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana. Chong Wei will face Chinese qualifier Qiao Bin next. Qiao Bin surprised Hans-Kristian Vittinghus 23-25, 21-12, 21-14.
Mixed doubles duo, Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying also had it easy when they swept past Matthew Nottingham and Emily Westwood 21-13, 21-15 to move into the next stage.
They will face Dutch pair Jacco Arends-Selena Piek in the second round tomorrow.
 
Fifth seeded dynamic doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong completed a fine day for Malaysia when they defeated Thailand’s Bodin Isara-Nipitphon Phuanghuapet 21-12, 21-7.
Iskandar Zulkarnain however was not celebrating as he went down fighting to India’s H.S. Prannoy who won 23-21, 19-21, 21-18.
