Malaysia walked off the pitch with their heads held high after a 2-2 draw against China in a Group A women’s hockey match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta on Thursday.

It was an enterprising performance by the Malaysians who even led 2-1 at one stage after canceling out China’s 10th-minute lead through Liang Mei Yu.

The Malaysians got the equalizer through Hanis Nadia Onn who was on target in the 33rd minute. And it was the hardworking Nadia who stunned the Chinese with her second for a 2-1 lead by Malaysia after 44 minutes.

Head coach K. Dharmaraj was a happy man with the result but added that “it would have been full points for us if we had not let out guard down” – referring to China’s second goal which came in the 51st minute through Gu Bin Feng.

“This is the first time we have taken a point off China in any senior tournament…I am proud of my players,” said Dharma, after the match. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
