Lai and Farouk at the Podium of the Touring Car Championship

Winner of Race 1 yesterday, the partnership of Lai Wee Sing and Farouk Abdul Kathir of R Engineering continued the superb form at the opening round of the Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) by winning Race 2 of the Touring Production class at Sepang International Circuit today.

Competing under scorching heat, the duo, who started from pole position in their Honda FD2 machine, led from start to finish; completing 22 laps for the one-hour endurance race and 4.560 seconds ahead of second-placed Mitchell Cheah of N1 Racing. Defending champion Mark Darwin, who competes this season under the banner of CPK Racing with Y.S. Lim, completed the podium for today’s race.

The Malaysia Touring Car (MTC) class also had a similar script with Nick Mah of Tedco Racing scoring a double win for the round; winning Race 2 by completing 21 laps and finishing 16.604 seconds ahead of Kenny Lee and Neo Cheng Hen, who were second in yesterday’s Race 1.

Chin Hwa Lip had to be contended with another third placing; finishing Race 2 today 50.223 seconds behind the winner in his Suzuki Swift.

Commenting on his victory, Farouk, who was also competing in the TCR Asia Series with Lai, dedicated the victory to his team mechanics, who he said had done a superb job throughout the weekend.

“By far, today’s race was the most difficult and most challenging day for me. Immediately after the TCR series which I won the Amateur category and Lai taking third place in the Pro category, we went straight for the MCS race. We are happy that we won for the second time this weekend. Credit must go to the team crew and mechanics. They work superbly in preparing the cars, which performed very well,” said Farouk.

With their double victory, both Farouk and Lai; and Nick collected a maximum 30 points to lead their respective championships, which would run for another four rounds. Round 2 will be held from 7 to 9 April.
