Myanmar retained the bronze in women’s football at KL2017 as the battle for gold and silver head into the decisive battle later today.

Under new coach Roger Reijners, the Myanmar girls recorded win over hosts Malaysia (5-0) and then the Philippines (6-0).

They stumbled 3-2 to defending champions Thailand in their opening tie before going down 3-1 to Vietnam.

“We came here with very high hopes of winning the gold medal but I think that the bronze is okay considering that we lost to the two favourites here,” said Reijners.

“We created and scored lots of goals against Malaysia and the Philippines. But lots of goals do not mean that Malaysia and the Philippines were inferior. They have improved a lot.

“To be a powerhouse in the region, we need to be able to beat Thailand and Vietnam. And that is something which we need to strategise for the long term.”

The gold and silver medals will be decided later this evening when defending champions Thailand take on the Philippines while Vietnam will entertain Malaysia.

Both Thailand and Vietnam are on the same seven points from three matches played.
