A rookie and a veteran combined to win the doubles gold on Sunday – Malaysia’s second in the Men’s World Championships in Hong Kong – after Rafiq Ismail won the singles gold on Saturday.

A newcomer to the senior team Tun Ameerul Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam and veteran Adrian Ang delivered the gold with a 433-370 victory over Americans Andrew Anderson-EJ Tackett in the final.

In the semi-finals, the Malaysian duo ousted Canadians Dan MacLellan-Francois Lavoie 458-412 while the Americans won 495-377 against Korea’s Park Jong-woo-Kim Kyung-min.

Tun Haim was promoted to the senior team in April this year and was playing in his first World Championships. On the other hand, Adrian is a veteran in the team since 2004.

Adrian attributed the win to patience and the tremendous help from coaches Holloway Cheah and Ben Heng on the lanes.

“We did not expect to win the gold but we did it.’

Rafiq clinched the singles gold on Saturday when he defeated MacLelland in the final 217-204.  RIZAL ABDULLAH
