Just like part of the ceiling at the Phan Dinh Phung Stadium that collapsed which forced the organisers to move the tournament to the Tan Binh Sports Center, Malaysian shuttlers did no better in the Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open in Ho Chi Minh City with only independent player Tan Chun Seang still standing.

The former national player made the semi-finals with a 21-13, 21-14 win over Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama in his quarter-final match. Another professional player Mohamad Arif Abdul Latif failed to advance when he fell to top seed Dionysius Hayon Rumbaka of Indonesia. The Indonesian won 19-21, 21-13, 22-20.

Second seeds Chooi Kah Ming-Teo Ei Yi were expected to go far in the men’s doubles but the national juniors came unstuck against Indonesia’s Advent Yulianto Chandra-Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki who won a three-set thriller 23-21, 9-21, 21-19 in 53 minutes.

Seventh seeds Andrei Adista-Hendraw Aprida Gunawan of Indonesia won 21-13, 21-15 against another Malaysian juniors pair Nelson Heg-Low Juan Shen 21-13, 21-15.

The women did no better with Uber Cupper Yang Li Lian, seeded sixth losing to eighth seed Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam 18-21, 12-21 in the second round in 31 minutes. Lim Chiew Sien was also a second round casualty against Maria Febe Kusumastuti and lost 13-21, 30-29, 19-21 to the third seeded Indonesian.

Lim Yin Fun was no match against second seed Pai Yu Po of Taiwan who won 21-15, 21-14.

Former national No 1 woman shuttler Lydia Cheah’s comeback trail ended in disaster when she failed to get beyond the first round in the qualifying rounds. The lanky Malaysian lost 21-14, 11-21, 18-21 to Taiwan’s Liang Ting Yu.
