Striker Safawi Rasid, fast turning out to be Malaysia’s hottest football property for his exploits on the field and was named as one of best players in the recently concluded Asian Games in Indonesia, has signed a new four-year deal with five Super League Champions Johor Darul Takzim (JDT).
 
Two others are goalkeeper Haziq Nadzli, who was Malaysia’s first choice keeper at the Asiad and up and coming young talent Syameer Kutty Abba (midfielder) are the other two players who have penned a new contract. The trios contract is until 2021.
 
Safawi scored a brace in Malaysia’s 2-1 win over defending champions South Korea in a group match. He also scored in the matches against Kyrgyzstan and Bahrain.
 
Alistair Edwards, JDT FC’s Technical Director also said in a posting on the Southern Tigers Facebook that Ahmad Hazwan Bakri (forward), Afiq Fazail (midfielder), Gary Steven Robbat (midfielder) have signed new contracts until 2020.
 
Defender S. Kunanlan has extended his existing contract for a season with an option to renew for another year until 2020. Aidil Zafuan Abdul Radzak has also extended his current contract until 2019.
 
“Buy out clauses ranging from RM6 million to RM15 millions were also included in the contracts,” said Edwards, a former Australian international who also played for Johor previously.
 
Edwards added that there are several other local players already contracted until the end of 2019 season. “JDT are still negotiating with three other players.” – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
