Asian Junior Under-19 champion Leong Jun Hao is the lone Malaysian standing in the men’s singles while in the women’s singles former champion Goh Jin Wei was joined by Eoon Qi Xuan in the fifth round in the World Junior Championships for the Eye Level Cup.

Qi Xuan dished out a pleasant surprise at the Among Rogo Arena in Yogjakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday with an upset 20-22, 21-18, 21-12 winĀ in 51 minutesĀ over Chinese Taipei’s 13th seed Huang Yin Hsuan.

However, for a place in the quarter-finals Qi Xuan has to get past top seed and favourite Pattarusuda Chaiwan of Thailand.

The Thai, who retained the Asian Junior Under-17 title in Yangon two weeks ago, battled for 50 minutes against South Korea’s An Se-young before prevailing 22-20, 9-21, 22-20.Ā

Fourth seed Jin Wei, the 2015 world junior champion, stormed past Canada’s Catherine Choi 21-14, 21-13Ā in 24 minutesĀ and is up against Indonesia’s 16th seed Choirunnisa Choirunnisa for a place in the quarter-finals.The Indonesian defeated South Korean Park Ga-eun 21-18, 20-22, 21-14.
Malaysia’s third player in the women’s singles Eng Sin Jou came unstuck against Indonesia’s Aurum Oktavia Winata who won 21-12, 21-16 in a 22-minute match.Ā

Jun Hao, seeded fourth, made short work of England’s Johnnie Torjussen 21-8, 21-14 in only 24 minutes to earn a fifth round clash against Leo Rossi of France. The French hope defeated Denmark’s Jesper Toft 21-10, 17-21, 22-20.Ā

But it was the end of Sim Fong Hau who fell to a 12-21, 21-19, 18-21 defeat to Japan’s Hikaru Minegishi in an hour-long battle.Ā
