It was mixed fortunes for Malaysia in the team event – striking gold in the men’s event while the two-time women’s champions women settled for the silver – at Manila’s Coronado Lanes on Friday.
 
Rafiq Ismail, Ahmad Muaz Fishol, Timmy Tan and Tun Ameerul Hakim Tun Hasnil Azam blazed the lanes for 4,980 pinfalls to regain gold Malaysia last won in 2015 in Singapore. The Philippines clinched the silver with 4,937 pinfalls while Thailand took the bronze with 4,896.
 
Singapore regained the women’s team gold they last won in Indonesia in 2011with 4833 pinfalls to dethrone Malaysia, winners of the gold in Singapore (2015) and Kuala Lumpur (2017).
 
The Malaysian quartet of Shalin Zulkifli, Sin Li Jane, Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman and Esther Cheah totalled 4,807 to finish second best. The host Philippines (4,735) settled for the bronze. – BY RIZAL ABDULLAH
