# Malaysians win US Grand Prix title

# Next stop is Mexico City Grand Prix

 

Malaysian’s top men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong stunned top seeds Vladimir Ivanov-Ivan Sozonov of Russia 21-14, 21-17 to win the US Grand Prix final at the Orange County Badminton Club in California on Saturday.

The Malaysians took home USD3.950 in prize money that came with the title while the Russian pair pocketed USD1,900.

The second seeded Malaysians won in only 27 minutes and in the process exacted sweet revenge on the Russians who beaten them in the final of the Russian Open in Vladivostok in July. The Russians won 22-20, 21-19 for the title.

The men’s singles title was won by South Korean veteran Lee Hyun-ll, the top seed who defeated second seed Rajiv Ouseph of England 21-19, 21-12 in the final.

A third final is in the offing between the Malaysians and the Russians who are seeded No 1 and  No 2 respectively in the USD50,000 Mexico City Grand Prix which begins on Tuesday.

The Russians are again the top seeds while V Shem-Wee Kiong are seeded second. Malaysia’s Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei are the top seeds in the women’s doubles while mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying are seeded second.

Independent player Zulfadli Zulkifli is seeded No 7 in the men’s singles.
