Kashyap.90* India’s P. Kashyap packs off Chinese ace in the quarter-finals

* Defending champion Jorgensen stays on course

India’s unseeded Kashyap Parupalli marched into the semi-finals of the USD800,000 BCA Indonesia Open Superseries Premier when he pulled off a stunning win over World No 1 Chen Long of China in the quarter-finals at the Istora Senayan Stadium in Jakarta on Friday.

Ranked No 12 in the world Kashyap showed the Chinese ace the exit with a come-from behind 14-21, 21-17, 21-14 win in 63 minutes to earn a semi-final clash against Japan’s world No 9 Kento Momota (seeded eight). Momota, a former world junior champion defeated Indonesia’s Ginting Anthony 13-21, 21-16, 21-15,

Chen Long, who is on a hot streak this year, having won the All England and the Malaysian Open and won the Australian Open in Sydney last week, went into the match against the Commonwealth Games champion with a 7-1 record in head to head count.

But Jakarta seems to be a bane for Chen Long when playing the Indian shuttler. It was in Jakarta he fell to his only defeat to Kashyap before Friday’s defeat when he lost 17-21, 14-21 in 2012 when the Indonesian Open was known as the Djarum Indonesian Open.

Defending champion Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark, who has moved up to World No 2, stayed in the hunt to retain his title with a straight sets 21-13, 21-15 win over SEA Games Indonesian youngster Christie Jonatan and will Germany’s Marc Zwiebler. The German, ranked No 19, defeated last year’s runners-up Kenichi Tago of Japan 21-15, 19-21, 21-17 in a 60 minute battle.
