# Singapore’s Tampines Rovers snatch 1-0 win to advance from Group E

# Ceres of the Philippines hammer Dhanmondi of Bangladesh to remain unbeaten

It was a night of misery for Selangor as the Red Giants slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Singapore’s Tampines Rovers in their final Group E match played at the National Stadium in Singapore on Tuesday.

Zainal Abidin Hassan and his Red Giants needed only a draw to advance while Tampines needed a win to advance – joining leaders Ceres La Salle of the Philippines who completed their group matches with an unbeaten record with a 5-0 hammering of Dhanmondi of Bangladesh in Bacolod City.

Ceres topped the group with 12 points 12 points while V. Sundramoorthy’s Tampines Rovers took second place with 10 points. Selangor ended up third in the group with seven points and Dhanmondi finished at the bottom with three points.

Former Kedah and Sarawak striker Billy Mehmet set-up Muhammad Yasir Hanapi’s 31st minute winner. Yasir curled a delightful left footer into the top left corner past a rooted Selangor goalkeeper Khairul Azhan Khalid for the only goal of the match watched by some 12,000 fans including die-hard Selangor fans.

It turned out to be a disappointing night for the drum beating Selangor supporters on a night when Tampines were reduced to 10 players with five minutes of regulation time left.

Australian Mehmet was given the marching orders by referee Jameel Jama of Bahrain in the 85th minute for his second yellow card for a scuffle. He picked up his first yellow card in the 58th minute.

Tampines will play India’s Mohun Bagan away in the Round of 16.

Ceres ran riot against Dhanmondi – riding on a hattrick by Adrian Gallardo who scored in the ninth, 57th and 64th minutes after Bienvendio Maranon opened the floodgates after seven minutes. Jeffrey Christianens got the fifth goal on 77 minutes.
