Olympic Council of Malaysia deputy president, Datuk Seri Abdul Azim Mohd Zabidi, was hoping more clubs like Royal Selangor Club will pay emphasis to development of sports.

“If only we have more private carry out activities like RSC, they will indeed be helping the various sports association as talent scout ground and playing their role in the development of sports in Malaysia,” said Azim who is also the Chef-de-Mission for the Jakarta/Palembang Asian Games in a fortnight’s times.

Azim officially declared open the two-day the 18th Tiger RSC International soccer 7’s and 16th Milo RSC Under 12 International Soccer 7’s tournament 2018 yesterday morning at the RSC Bukit Kiara Sports Annex.

“Organising a tournament of this magnitude is not an easy effort and having sustained it for 16 years for the Under-12 and 18 years for the veteran tournament, is indeed an immense success.

“It is indeed great to see so many young footballers out here this morning and that there are so many football academies who are competing. This certainly augurs well for the future of Malaysian football.”

Azim also paid to several football internationals who were present – Datuk N. Thanabalan, Datuk Soh Chin Aun, Datuk Santokh Singh, Datuk Chen Wooi Hwa, Vincent Thambirajah and Ho Hon Seong, telling the young players that these were among the players who brought honour to Malaysia and put Malaysian football in the Asian map.

“You young players should try to emulate these icons,” said Azim,

On the tournament, Azim said: “It gives me great pleasure to be part of this prestigious tournament which has a rich history and grown into a prestigious tournament in the region with international flavour.”

Since the founding of Royal Selangor Club in 1884, its main objective has always been to promote sports by organizing both local and international sporting events.

This year’s tournament hav drawn a large following of soccer enthusiasts both locally and internationally ranging local teams as well as international teams from the Netherlands, Australia, India, Maldives, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia.

The tournament will see three categories competed – the Under-12, Masters (40 years above with three players allowed 35 years above) and Grand Masters (50 years above and an exception of three players 45 above)

There are total of 16 teams in the Under-12 category, 16 in the Masters and 12 in the Grand Masters.

The two-day tournament will culminate with the finals on tomorrow afternoon.

Among the highlights of the tournament, besides the many ex-internationals and former State players playing in the veteran categories, the Under-12 tournament will see two all-girls compete – Supergirls Subang Jaya and Golden Dream Team Circuit FC from Singapore. Defending champions of this category – 1st Touch Assumption from Penang – will also be competing.
