# Hosts win men’s singles and doubles titles in Indonesia Open
Indonesia gave strong signals that they will be a force to be reckoned with in next month’s E-Plus Badminton Asia Team Championships in Alor Setar, Kedah when they won the men’s singles and men’s doubles titles in the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta on Sunday.
Twenty-one year-old Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, ranked No 16 smashed his way t a 21-13, 21-12 win over Japan’s 21 ranked Kazumasa Sakai in the men’s singles final in 33 minutes.
This is Ginting’s second superseries title. He won the Korea Open last year, defeating compatriot Christie Jonatan in an all-Indonesia final.
World No 1 and top seeds Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo wrapped a marvellous day for the homesters when they came back from a game down to beat China’s No 2 seeds Li Junhui-Liu Yuchen for a 11-21, 21-10, 21-16 for the men’s doubles title which came in 57 minutes.
The strong performance by the Indonesians in the Indonesia Masters makes them hot favourites to defend their men’s team title in the Asian Championships which also serves as a qualifier for the Thomas Finals which will be held in Bangkok from May 20-27. The semi-finalists in the Asian meet will qualifier for the Thomas Cup.
Meanwhile, world No 1 and to seed Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei breezed to the women’s singles title with a rather easy 21-9, 21-13 win over India’s former world number one Saina Nehwal to pocket USD26,250 in prize money. Nehwal took home USD13, 300 for her efforts.
The women’s doubles went to Rio Olympics champions and top seeds Misaki Matsutomo-Ayaka Takahashi of Japan. The Japanese beat No 8 seeds Greysia Polii-Apriyani Rahayu of Indonesia 21-17, 21-17 in the final.
There was heartbreak for Indonesia in the mixed doubles final when China’s sixth seeds Zheng Siwei-Huang Yaqiong upset Olympics and world champions Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir 21-14, 21-11 for the title.
The champions won themselves USD27650 while the losers settled for USD13,300 in the USD350,000 tournament – the third in the world tour after the Thailand Masters and the Malaysia Masters. BADMINTON ASIA
