Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with the spirit his side showed in coming from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Burnley, despite his winning streak coming to an end.
Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood had put Burnley on course for a first win at Old Trafford since 1962 but Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof rescued a point for the hosts.
“The way they came back was fantastic, so of course you’re happy with a point, but then again we could have got three even at the end.
“We just ran out of time towards the end and we started too late with the urgency that we needed. That’s a learning curve but now you’ve got your answer, can they come back if they go one down or two down even, so I’m very happy with the response.”
Solskjaer was looking for a ninth straight win in all competitions – and a record-breaking seventh at the start of a Premier League reign – but United missed the chance to move level on points with fourth-place Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
“Rom (Romelu Lukaku) has done really well against Burnley before. He’s scored, he’s a handful and with Anthony (Martial) injured we thought that was the best option with Rashy (Marcus Rashford) out there. Of course he got a couple of chance but today wasn’t his day.”
Burnley moved four points clear of the relegation zone.
Making a rare start, young United midfielder Andreas Pereira gave the ball away to Burnley in the build up to the opening goal.
“The danger of winning might be that you think what we’ve done before gives us the right to start off on 90 per cent, because we’re winning one or two-nil, but we don’t. You have to start properly in each game and today we didn’t start off well enough to cause Burnley enough problems.” SNTV
