It was an eagerly awaited battle in Jakarta but in the end host Persija just could not get the better of Persib Bandung when they were held to a 1-1 stalemate in an Indonesia Shopee Liga 1 tie yesterday that was played at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

The match had received wide attention for several weeks considering the close rivalry between the two giants of Indonesian football as defending champions Persija were eager to showcase their pedigree.

And while Persija managed to give solace to their army of Jakmania – as Persija fans are known as – when Marko Simic blasted in a 75th minute lead, Persib’s determination saw them pulling in a late goal off  Artur Gevorkyan late in the 91st minute of play.

“We played well overall where we created a handful of chances in the first half but just could not find that last touch for goal,” said Persija head coach  Julio Banuelos.

The disappointment of picking up just one point at home was compounded further with the red card on Novri Setiawan just a minute after Persija’s goal.

With the one point, Persija remained on 13th in the standings with Persib a rung higher at 12th. Early pace setter Madura United have slipped down to third as Bali United take over the top spot.
