The Under-14 team of Gambang Sports School has won the Super League title this year with two games to spare following their confident 2-0 win over SMK Seksyen 11 of Selangor on Saturday.

In the game that was played at the SMK USJ 23 Mini Stadium in Subang Jaya, the side from Pahang was never in danger of losing their focus as they scored a goal in each half for the full three points.

Muhammad Aiman Syakir Mohd Zulkifli fired in from close range in the 33rd minute as Muhamad Adam Fahimi Mohamad Bashir’s one-timer in the 67th minute rounded off a fine afternoon for the visitors.

The win was their 11th win in 12 matches.

“I don’t think that we have better quality players than the other teams. If anything, it is just that we are a little better organized and a bit more composed,” said Azman Ismail, the head coach of Gambang Sports School.

“Winning the Super League was just the first step. After this we have to better prepare ourselves for the quarter-finals which will be a different ball game altogether.”

With Gambang the runaway winner of the top league, the fight is now on for the remaining teams to fight for the remaining four available places into the quarter-finals.

There are still five teams still in contention for the four spots including defending champions SMK Bukit Nenas of Terengganu, who this week beat another contender SMK Syed Hassan of Perlis on the road to improve their chances.

The only goal of the game came off Muhamad Azam Mohd Razali in the 25th minute as SMK Bukit Nenas moved up to fourth from fifth.

“We are still within a chance of making the cut (for the quarter-finals). It has been a tough year this year when compared to the previous season,” said SMK Bukit Nenas coach Asmawi Sulong.

“We lost some games which we should not have and that have hampered our hopes of keeping pace of the leaders.”

In the meantime, a 1-1 draw against SMK Seri Kota of Melaka this week was enough for Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (U14) to capture their first ever Premier League title.

Arif Hakimi Mohd Fahmi had given the home team SMK Seri Kota the lead on 64 minute only for Muhammad Aikmal Roslan to blast in the equalizer four minutes later.

With the win of the lower division crown, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School has confirmed their place in the quarter-finals with two more places remaining for the other teams to vie for.
