Hosts Indonesia put up a battling performance but in the end it was not enough when they were denied a place in the quarter-finals of the men’s football event at the Asian Games by United Arab Emirates in the Round of 16 tonight.

The score at the end of regulation was 2-2 before UAE booked their place in the quarter-finals winning 4-3 in the penalty shootouts.

In the match that was played at the Wibawa Mukti Stadium, the hosts fell behind by Zayed Alameri’s 20th minute strike for the UAE before Alberto Goncalves fought back with the equaliser seven minutes after the break.

UAE then went ahead again through Zayed on 65 minutes as Indonesia then forced the match into extra time with Stefano Lilipaly drawing level deep in injury time.

With extra-time still deadlocked, the ensuing penalty shootouts saw Indonesia missing through David Maulana and Saddil Ramdani while those who found the target was Muhammad Hargianto, Goncalves and Lilipaly.

UAE scored through Husain Abdulla, Khalid Aldhanhani, Alameri and Ahmed Alhashmi while Abdalla Alalawi missed.
