A youthful Japanese side proved that they were worthy of a place in the quarter-finals of the men’s football event at the Asian Games when they edged Malaysia 1-0 in a Round of 16 tie that was played at the Patriot Chandrabhaga Stadium last night.

In spite of having the lion’s share of the possession, Japan wasted a hatful of opportunities as the Malaysians counter with several close chances of their own.

But just when the game seems to be headed for extra-time, Malaysian defender Dominic Tan was faulted for bringing down Ayase Ueda inside the box in the 88th minute – to which referee Bijan Heidari from Iran did not hesitate to point to the spot.

Ayase himself converted the ensuing penalty to give Japan the lead and the win.
