Malaysia brought the SEA Games Thailand 2025 to a close with a fourth-place overall finish and 57 gold medals, a result that provides both confidence and continuity as the nation begins its build-up to hosting the 34th edition of the Games in 2027.
The final flourish came fittingly from sepaktakraw, a sport synonymous with Malaysiaâs regional pedigree, as the menâs regu team delivered the contingentâs last gold medal of the Games by overcoming Vietnam in the final.
The victory lifted Malaysiaâs final medal tally to 57 gold, 57 silver and 117 bronze, giving the contingent 231 medals overall, comfortably surpassing the pre-Games target of 200 medals and marking Malaysiaâs best-ever SEA Games medal haul outside Kuala Lumpur.
The trio of Syahir Rosdi, Azlan Alias and Farhan Adam stamped their authority early, cruising through the opening set 15â9. Even after Syahir was replaced by Haziq Hairul Nizam in the second set, Malaysiaâs rhythm never faltered as they closed out another 15â9 win to secure their first SEA Games regu gold since Kuala Lumpur 2017.
The sepaktakraw gold provided a symbolic end to the 2025 campaign that saw Malaysia steadily gather pace as the Games progressed, peaking in the latter stages with strong performances across traditional and Olympic sports alike.
Thailand reaffirmed their regional supremacy sealing the overall title with 233 gold, 154 silver and 112 bronze medals. Indonesia finished second with 91-111-131, followed by Vietnam in third place with 87-81-110.
Malaysiaâs fourth-place finish (57-57-117) kept them ahead of Singapore (52-61-89), with the Philippines next on 50-73-154. The remaining positions were filled by Myanmar (3-21-49), Laos (2-9-28), Brunei Darussalam (1-3-5) and Timor-Leste (0-1-7).
The Games officially conclude tonight with the closing ceremony at the Rajamangala National Stadium, where the SEA Games Federation flag will be formally handed over to Malaysia, signalling the start of the countdown to SEA Games 2027 on home soil.
