The second round draw for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 /AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification will be held in July 2019.
Following from the first round of matches the previous week, five teams made the progress for the second round and they are Cambodia (who beat Pakistan), Malaysia (who beat Timor Leste), Mongolia (over Brunei), Bangladesh (over Laos) and Guan (beat Bhutan).
The match between Macau and Sri Lanka – with the latter holding a 1-0 advantage – will be decided later.
For the second round of matches, 40 teams will be divided into eight groups where they will play between 5 September 2019 to 9 June 2020.
Only 12 teams will make the progress to the next round, with the eight group winners plus four best runner-ups.
The 12 teams will then play in the third round of the qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022 whre they will also qualify automatically for the Asian Cup 2023.
The remainder will continue to play for the Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers.
